China’s bike-sharing battle spreads to Singapore
The fierce competition between China’s bike-sharing start-ups spread to Singapore on Tuesday as Tencent-backed Beijing company Mobike launched in the city state, challenging Didi Chuxing-backed rival ofo.

Mobike’s orange-coloured bicycles and ofo’s yellow ones have become a familiar sight in many Chinese cities, where so many cycles have been deployed that local officials are running out of ways to keep them from littering the streets.

In an effort to avoid similar scenes on the pristine streets of Singapore, Mobike is launching on a smaller scale with 500 bikes, and plans to increase the supply once it has gauged demand.

“The launch today is the first stage of a full-scale deployment, so the number of bikes being deployed will scale up quickly in the coming weeks,” Mobike said.

The competition between Mobike and ofo echoes the battle for market share between ride-hailing companies Uber and Grab in Singapore.

Mobike is charging users S$0.50 for 30 minutes and a S$49 (US$35) deposit for its launch promotion in the city-state. Ofo is offering free rides and no deposit in Singapore this month.

A third bike-sharing business, Singapore start-up oBike, charges S$1 for 30 minutes and also requires a S$49 deposit.

Mobike, the world’s most popular bike-sharing company by app downloads, is backed by Tencent, Warburg Pincus and Singapore state investment fund Temasek, while ofo is backed by investors including Didi Chuxing and Chinese phonemaker Xiaomi.

The bike-sharing companies are concentrating their deployment on Singapore’s public transit stations and commuter suburbs, in an effort to provide a solution for commuters’ “last mile” journeys between home and public transport.

The use of bicycles, once ubiquitous on Singapore’s streets, dropped in the 1970s as car ownership took off.

While many Singaporeans enjoy weekend mountainbiking trips, bicycles are often seen as a lower-status mode of transport compared with driving — despite the high cost of car ownership permits in Singapore.

Singapore’s government is pushing to encourage the use of cycles in an effort to curb carbon dioxide emissions, reduce road congestion and improve citizens’ health.

In China, the clutter caused by thousands of shared bicycles suddenly appearing on city streets has alarmed city officials.

On Sunday the local government of one of Beijing's central districts, Xicheng, called on Mobike and ofo to control the number of bikes in the district, and banned shared bicycles from being parked on 10 major roads.
